I can hardly believe ...............

........... that's it's 26 years ago tomorrow since Jodie - my last child - was born. Yep - my baby will be 26 at precisely 3.06pm tomorrow afternoon!

I don't think any of us would have guessed on that day, that she would eventually grow into the stunningly beautiful, 6ft 2ins, long-red-haired goddess that she has become. :)

No joy :(

I had a feeling I wouldn't be able to find a ballgown today and I was right, unfortunately. Long Tall Sally had absolutely nothing, Dorothy Perkins was the same.
Debenhams had a few really nice ones, but all were either over £100, or were sleeveless/strapless. Ok for a young bod, but not for an overweight 50 year old. No sirreeee!

So I'll be wearing my old, black velvet number again. Ah well.

Frightfully frumpy and fearsomely fat

Wahey - another alliterative title! lol

I tried on my ballgown this morning and although it does fasten, it's very tight. From behind, all you can see are these rolls of fat around my sides - not a pretty sight! So, I'm going to Aberdeen with Tim tomorrow on the offchance of finding something else to wear. I'm not holding my breath though. If the worst comes to the worst, I'll just HAVE to wear old faithful and be done with it.

Granite City Ball

On Saturday, Tim and I are going to the Granite City Ball ( ...... you SHALL go to the ball! ) for the 3rd time. This year will be very different though, because Tim is actually the Chairman of the organising committee. The amount of work he's put into this is phenomenal - and it's definitely paying off because in previous years, they were lucky if 200 tickets were sold. This years however, he has managed to sell 360!! Yay for my beloved! :)

It's all to help raise money for the Aberdeen Geological Society and for the RNLI.

We're staying overnight in a cheapo Travelodge-type hotel, which is only just within walking distance of the beautiful Beach Ballroom, where the Ball is to be held.

I only have one frock that's nice enough to wear, but I'm scared to try it on in case I'm far too fat for it now. If I am, I really have no idea what I'll do. :(

Yet more pills!

So after I got home from work, Tim and I were having supper when the phone rang. The caller display showed 'Withheld', but Tim answered anyway. 'This is a personal phonecall for Brenda Davis', said a woman's voice. 'Who's calling?' asked Tim. 'This is a personal call for Brenda Davis', she said again. 'Who's calling, please?' asked Tim again. The voice then repeated itself once more, before Tim handed the receiver to me. I almost hung up, because I have the most awful phobia about talking on the phone, but I forced myself to say hello.

Turned out to be the doctor's surgery. Apparently, they aren't allowed to say that it's the doctor calling any more! I'm at a loss as to understand why!

Anyway, she went on to say that my doctor wants me to start taking Reductil now. My thyroid levels are very low, so it's safe for me to take this weight-loss medication. I don't have them yet, so I Googled to find out a bit about it. Apparently it works on the brain, which sends an 'I'm full' message, even though you're not! It has to be used in tandem with a decent diet and a spot of exercise, so that when you come off the tablets, the weight doesn't pile back on.

I honestly can't wait to begin to lose some of this. I think, because it's gone on SO quickly (in the space of just 5-6 weeks), I'm having a very hard time with my mobility and I just feel like a great, lumbering hulk of blubber.

Wonder how much I'll be able to lose?

Altered tin and coasters

Here is a tin that I altered, using Oriental-style papers. I used watered-down Pva to stick the papers on the tin, then I used it again to coat the papers afterwards to seal them and to make them look slightly shiny - and kind of lacquered.
I used a mixture of alcohol inks and peel-off pens to colour the bare bits of tin that were still showing. Finally, I added a metal dragonfly and a couple of strings of beads.
The book is made from two old leather coasters, covered and sealed with the same paper and glue. I made pages to fit, then inserted them and used gold bookrings to fix. Three coins are glued on the cover as a finishing touch.
Have to say, I really am pleased with how these have turned out. I like my altered stuff to look old, well-handled and loved!

Another Pair of Pirate Party Pics!

Oooooh, I love the alliterative title of this post! :)

Top picture is a lovely one of my beautiful girls. That's Kerry on the left and Miss Jodie on the right ........ both looking suitably pirate-wenchy! :)

The bottom picture shows another four of the pirates who came to party. Darren is standing at back left and I can't believe that he bleached his beard, then dyed it blue!!! Wow - that's dedication! Next to him is his girlfriend Fiona. At the front are Kim and Valda and I have NO idea what they're doing, but it looks funny!

Oscars!

I love Oscar night!

Sad though I may be, I've always loved the Oscar ceremony! It may be typically American and therefore by definition, shmaltzy, but it's still exciting ....... and of course, the ladies gowns are always lovely to see.

I'm hoping Forest Whittaker wins Best Actor, although it would be lovely if Peter O'Toole won too. Helen Mirren for Best Actress? Hmmmmmmm, I'm not 100% convinced she even deserved the Bafta, but hey ..... what do I know? lol :)

Yes, he did!

But only just! Tim arrived home at 5.15pm, which really didn't give me enough time to drive to Tesco, get the shopping and get through the checkout, before closing time. I used the self-service checkout, because it's usually much quicker, but wouldn't you know it, today it was playing up and querying each and every item I scanned!! Grrrrrrr.

Never mind, eh?

Watched 'Lost' again tonight. Oh how I love this programme, but it also frustrates me because the characters just don't ask the questions that ANY real person would ask!! Who are you? Why are you here? How did you get here and how long have you been here? Why are you keeping us here? etc etc etc. The amount of time that Jack, Kate and Sawyer have been in captivity, gave them ample time for questions! lol

I just hope that if and when the whole thing comes to an end, that we are left with a decent ending!

Will he make it?

Tim's away at his swordfighting class again. I asked him to be home in time that I can go to Tesco for shopping before they close, so I hope he remembers!! :)

My backpiece

Here's an old piccie of my gorgeous centaur backpiece. This was taken on the day he was done, hence the red!! :)
The lilies on my shoulder were done in one sitting, but the centaur was done in two. The first one for the outline, then the shading was done on the second.
I adore him!

Thyroid problems are a pain in the neck!

I was diganosed with an overactive thyroid a few months ago. It all happened in a roundabout sort of way. I've been plagued with migraines for years and years and I've been on Pizotifen to try to prevent them for almost 10 years now. Anyway - those tablets really didn't seem to be helping so my doctor decided to try me on Beta Blockers (Propranolol) to see if they would help more. Well, to cut a really long story short .......... they didn't help in the least - in fact, I think I was getting even more migraines than ever. One day at work, I took a really severe dizzy spell and ended up in hospital because I couldn't walk! Turns out, the Propranolol had lowered my blood pressure to dangerous levels, so I was taken off them immediately.

During all this, I had countless blood tests done and one of them showed up that I had a slightly overactive thyroid (see? I'm getting to the point of this post now! lol).

Looking back, I can see the signs that I never recognised at the time. My customers had begun to notice that I was talking very quickly and that I always seemed to be hashed and out of breath. I was also having REAL problems with my upper arms - especially the left one - which were SO painful, I couldn't raise them above my head, nor could I put on, or take off, a jacket without help.

So, I got an appointment at the Thyroid clinic in Aberdeen and was put on 30mg of Carbimazole per day, for 6 weeks, then I got another blood test to see how things were going.

They think I'm now slightly underactive, which would explain the HUGE weight gain within the last few weeks and the lethargy and the weakness. It's horrible, I tell you. It's just not me ...... and I SO want to be ME again.

Oooooooh-arrrrrrrrr, me Hearties!!

Last night, my younger daughter Jodie and her best friend Joanne, held a pirate-themed party to celebrate their birthdays. Joanne's was last week and Jodie's is this coming week - so they always hold a party half-way between them!

About 20 guests arrived and it was fabulous to see everyone in their costumes!!

That's me and elder daughter Kerry on the right. I'm on the voddy and orange - and Kerry is on Morgan's!

Kerry and hubby Simon are below. Don't they look fab? :)

I'll try to get some more pics uploaded when I manage to find the time to do it.

Anyway, great fun and booziness were had by all and it never broke up till 5.00am!

This is my new home!

After blogging for a while on another place, I've decided the time is right to make the change to Blogger.
I'm hoping to keep this updated as often as I can, but there are days when nothing much interesting happens at all.

Anyway, we'll see! :)
